Sometimes a glittering career hides many of the most tragic stories. Lolo is in her current position after much struggle and perseverance. Jones was the only child in a family of five who lived in extreme poverty. The mother of Jones moved around constantly and stayed for a while in the church basement. Jones was required to go to a new high school each year because of her nomadic lifestyle. At Theodore Roosevelt High School, Jones was separated from her mother in order to pursue her interest in track events. Her family was split up throughout high school, so that she was able to concentrate on her academics. Jones also performed as a cellist for the orchestra at school. In high her school, she received the Gatorade Athlete of the Year Award from Iowa Track and Field. Jones started her professional career at the college level as one of the most talented hurdlers.
